I think Atonement might win this one, but not because it's the better movie. This year will be the same as 1999 regarding Best Picture. That year, Saving Private Ryan, Shakespeare in Love, and The Thin Red Line were all nominated for Best Picture. Both war films were leagues better than Shakespeare in Love, but because they were both war films, they both appealed to the same audience. Thus, the votes were split and Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture.

Same thing will happen this year. No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood both appeal to the same audience. The votes will be split, and Atonement will win.

I haven't seen any of the films nominated (besides Juno), by the way. Hoping to change that soon.

i have been baffled throughout this season that "no country" has won basically every award (and slightly more baffled when "atonement" won the golden globe). "no country" is a very well made movie, but it never compelled me the way "there will be blood" did. i really like the ending of "no country," but its other ambiguities (woody harrelson's character, the corporate guy he worked for) just left me disappointed and slightly confused. perhaps i'm bickering with the source material, but how can a movie that isn't fully understood win best picture?

that being said, "there will be blood" is my choice for best picture. it is a complete movie, a full story, riveting and epic, everything a best picture should be. "no country" seems to have a small scale compared to this behemoth.
