Meryl Streep should win - her turn as ice queen Miranda Priestly was flawless. And extremely quotable.
I loved Streep's portrayal of Miranda Priestly as well, but I'll reserve judgment until after I've seen The Queen.
I have not actually seen The Queen, but I heard that Helen Mirren was absolutely amazing, so I'm going to "go with the flow", and assume she's going to get the Oscar.... Any time someone portrays someone else in a film (and the glimpses I've seen of her in the trailers and just photos), she looks/sounds the part, so if she can replicate the queen that well (and two queens at that), she'll probably win.
This is such an interesting category this year. I look at the list and feel like everyone on it should have an Oscar.
I saw The Queen and was extremely impressed, but I never got a chance to see Meryl Streep in The Devil.... So, other than my initial comment, I have difficulty making a judgement. Especially when Dame Judi Dench is in the mix.
You can borrow the DVD of The Devil Wears Prada from the front desk!
Although I thought Helen Mirren did a fine job in The Queen, I do not think she should win the award. Will she? Maybe, because she definitely did become the part. She had a special diction coach to take on the part who didn't try to teach her how the queen specifically spoke, but instead how the upper class of that generation spoke- making the character less of a cartoon of the queen and more of a real person in Mirren. However, despite all this, I just was not overly amazed... at least when compared to some of the other choices. For example, I was incredibly engaged by Penelope Cruz in Volver. Of course her character also had a great deal more fire to her than the queen, but she did played it excellently and I'd rather see the award go there. I am going to watch Devil Wears Prada tonight so my vote may change after... but for now, I just say not Helen Mirren.
